Pick free cherries at 5221. The owners say bring a container and help yourself. These are sour cherries--not the sweet ones you get at the grocery store--but they are great for pies.
Here is a link to a local blog with a sour cherry pie recipe: http://pghtasted.blogspot.com. In the interest of full disclosure I must say that pitting cherries is the pits. I bought a fancy cherry-pitter, and it works okay, but not much better than the old-fashioned bobby pin method. Either way, the reward is worth the work.
Enjoy!
We sampled a few directly from the tree and found them tartly delicious! So we got a bowl with a lid and picked enough for a super dessert for two. Thank you Very Much!
ReplyDeleteA Beeler Steet blog is a wonderful idea, unless it becomes a growling site for complainers. But surely we don't have any cranky folk on Beeler - Bmont - Unger! In a spirit of Positive Thinking, I will even withhold my views on the sad unGreenness of CMU's field alterations! Mary
Thanks, Mary. I am trying to keep this blog an informational site rather than a gripe forum. But If it spawns action on things that people feel are important, that's okay too.
ReplyDeleteI was sad to see those great pine trees go, but from my cursory review of the plans, it looks like at least part of the field will remain natural grass.
Bobbi and I came with bucket and ladder this evening. She is making jam as I type. Thanks for the cherries!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! I am not brave enough for jam--maybe next year.
